Tschahar Schanbe Suri
Tschahar Shambe Suri ( Persian : چهارشنبهسوری, Romanized : čahâr-šanbeh sūrī (literally "Festive Wednesday"); usually pronounced Čāršamba-sūrī ) is an Iranian festival that takes place on the last Wednesday before Nouruz (New Year's Day on March 20 or 21) according to the Iranian calendar) is celebrated. The celebrations begin the evening before (Tuesday evening).
Etymology origin
The Persian name of the festival is derived from the terms čahāršanbe (چهارشنبه) ( "Wednesday") and Suri (سوری) ("festive"). Local variants of the name of the festival are in Azerbaijani Gūl Čāršamba , in Kurdish Kola Čowāršamba and Čowāršama Koli or in Pashto چهارشنبهسوری. The bonfires were lit to welcome the spirits of the dead. They thought that flames, as a sign of God, could protect the dead souls from evil.
Rituals
Fire jumping
Before the festival begins, people gather in an open, free space. At sunset they light one or more campfires and jump over the flames. They sing sorxi-ye to az man, zardi-ye man az to , which literally means in Persian : "Let your restlessness be mine, my paleness yours" or a local variant of this saying. This practice is seen as a cleansing ritual.
Spoon hitting
Charshanbe Suri contains a custom that is similar to the Halloween custom and is called qāšoq-zani (قاشقزنی) (literally "spoon -hitting "). People wear disguises and go from door to door. There they hit spoons against plates or bowls and use them to solicit sweets.
distribution
Tschahar Schambe Suri is celebrated in Iran , Afghanistan , Tajikistan , Azerbaijan , Turkmenistan , Uzbekistan and by Kurds and Azerbaijanis in Turkey , Iraq and Syria . The sad reality includes deaths and injuries every year.
