The Czech language Wikipedia ( Czech Česká Wikipedie ) is the Czech version of the international Wikipedia project. In November 2018, it had 31 administrators , 357,000 registered users and 416,000 articles.

Development of the number of articles

In November 2006 there were 50,000 items, in June 2008 100,000 and in February 2010 150,000 items. In July 2011 it reached an inventory of 200,000 articles. In December 2012 it passed the 250,000 item mark. It currently has 268,909 articles (as of June 30, 2013) and takes 21st place among Wikipedia projects. The main page alone ( Hlavní strana ) was viewed 8,933,188 times between March 17 and June 14, 2013.

history

The Czech language Wikipedia was set up on May 3, 2002, and the number of articles only started to develop significantly in the course of 2004.

Especially in the first few years the project had to go through some serious crises, at the center of which were the first bureaucrat of the project (administrator with special rights) and an apparently non-encyclopaedic matter - the month-long dispute over spelling. This dispute quickly turned into a question of power and almost led to the collapse of the project. There were some bans, the bureaucrat, who favored a spelling from the beginning of the 20th century, finally succumbed, lost his rights and was later banned himself. This was also the first major dispute to find an echo in the media. The other problems that aroused media attention were more related to disputes from which every Wikipedia suffers.

Importance and external impact

The Czech language version of Wikipedia has a high access rate, especially when compared to other Czech language websites.

In 2007 and 2010 the Czech-language Wikipedia was declared the overall winner of the Czech Open Source competition , which is organized annually by the root.cz server , and in 2008 it won the "Project" category.

The Czech-language Wikipedia has had a mutually beneficial cooperation with the National Library of the Czech Republic for a long time , the focus of which is on the provision of data and content and the mutual linking of this data. The Czech web portal seznam.cz puts the entire content of the Czech language Wikipedia on the Internet as a clone.

Sister projects and Wikimedia

Among the sister projects of the Czech-language Wikipedia, the same-language version of Wikiquote (Czech: Wikicitáty , 9th place among the Wikimedia projects) and Wikisource (Czech: Wikizdroje , 15th place) should be mentioned.

The operator of the Czech language Wikipedia - as well as all other language versions of the free Internet encyclopedia - is the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco, USA. The local association, Wikimedia Česká republika (Wikimedia Czech Republic), was established on March 6, 2008. Wikimedia CS appears at various events such as Linux Expo in Prague, book fairs, etc.
