The Tschetwerikow SPL ( Russian Четвериков СПЛ ) was the project of a Soviet miniature flying boat from the 1930s. It should be carried by submarines in a folded state and used for reconnaissance if necessary . That is why it was designed so that it could be set up ready to fly in four minutes. The name SPL stands for "Samoljot dlja podwodnoi lodki" (самолёт для подводной лодки, plane for submarines). Two prototypes were built and tested.

development

In 1931, the designer Igor Tschetwerikow proposed to the Soviet naval command to develop a small, dismountable flying boat for the planned large submarines that were to be used on the oceans. His proposal was only accepted two years later. Since Tschetwerikow had meanwhile moved from the Central Design Office to the "OSGA" department of the Institute for Civil Aviation (NII GWF), the first prototype was named OSGA-101 (ОСГА-101).

Work began in the autumn of 1933. The aircraft consisted of a two-stage , keeled wooden boat hull with two tail girders made of tubular steel . The 75 kW radial engine M-11 was attached to a boom above the fuselage, making it splash-proof. The first prototype was designed as an amphibian and had a manually retractable wheel chassis.

The first flight took place in the spring of 1934 and went without any problems. Then a smaller, second test model with the designation Gidro-1 (Гидро-1), which was a pure flying boat, was created. When folded, it had a size of 2.12 mx 2.75 mx 7.45 m and was placed in a cylindrical, waterproof tube 7.5 m long and 2.85 m in diameter on a submarine deck . The trials from late 1934 to August 29, 1935 showed excellent flight characteristics, but the hydrodynamic parameters left something to be desired, which is why the naval war command lost interest in this project. The Gidro-1 was handed over to the OSSOAWIACHIM and presented to the public at the 1935 Milan Air Show.

The OSGA-1 set three world records in 1937 with the pilot A. W. Krschischewski. On September 21, it reached a speed of 170.2 km / h on a 100 km route. On October 7th a summit height of 5400 m and a range of 480 km could be achieved.
