Tubman Center of African Culture

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tubman Center of African Culture was a state arts and culture center in the Liberian district of Grand Cape Mount County and was located in the outskirts of the district capital Robertsport .

Construction of the cultural center began in 1964 to honor President William Tubman by local elites on the occasion of his 69th birthday. In December 1967 the president inaugurated an art museum in a side wing . The first director was the Swedish ethnologist and Liberia expert Kjell Zetterström.

The cultural center has also served as an educational facility since it was founded, and students from neighboring African countries were able to get involved with Liberian scholars and artists in projects on African art and history. Projects financed from government grants created a contemporary art collection. A monthly publication provided information on the activities and research results.

Nothing is known about the further history and future of the cultural center. The building is still there, but in poor condition.
