Do devotionis sinceritas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tue devotionis sinceritas is a papal bull which Pope Clement VI. on November 15, 1344 in Avignon .

The bull addresses Luis de la Cerda directly . Prompted by his requests ("... petitiones tuas ... libenter ad exauditionis gratiam admittamus"), as it is stated in the bull, the Pope gives him the principality of the Happy Islands . The basis for the bestowing of an almost unknown land by the Pope as a fief was the medieval theory that the representative of God was authorized to freely assign countries that were not ruled by Christian rulers. In the bull itself this apostolic authority (auctoritas apostolica) is referred to several times, which in later bulls z. B. Inter caetera was detailed. However, it is also stated that the Pope issued this bull after consulting with the cardinals and with their consent (fratrum consilio et assensu).

The territory of the principality, apparently the Canary Islands, is described in the bull with terms and names that are based on the reports of King Juba II , as handed down by Pliny , and based on classical mythology . The Curia was certainly informed of the more recent results of research trips, but avoided going into them in order not to have to admit that other Christian monarchs could already assert rights to the islands. A formula was used in the text which said that the transfer of rights should only take place if the existing rights of other Christian monarchs were not impaired.

The bull mentioned the duties of Luis de la Cerda and his heirs and successors. This was primarily the spread of the Christian faith among the inhabitants of the islands, but also the annual payment of a loan interest of 400 florins , payable on the holiday of Peter and Paul . The rights of the prince as well as monarch such as B. the minting of coins but also as a church patron in the establishment of churches and monasteries were regulated.

The Christian rulers were informed of the content of the bull and asked to support the prince in carrying out the Christianization.

In a letter dated February 15, 1345 , King Alfonso IV of Portugal and the King of Castile, Alfonso XI, brought against the regulations of the bull Tuae devotionis sinceritas . objected in a letter dated March 13, 1345.
