The Tugen , also Tuken , with 144,000 (1987) are a small ethnic group that lives in Kenya in the Baringo County around the Tugen Hills. They belong to the Kalendjin ethnic group ; here, in turn, they are counted among the highland nilots , which include the Nandi , Marakwet , Pokot and Kipsigis .
Ex-President Daniel arap Moi was born near the capital of the Tugen, Kabarnet . Together with the Nandi, the Tugen make up most of Kenya's famous long-distance runners. The Tugen are mostly cattle herders, and they are also famous for their skills as beekeepers .
