A tunnel attendant is responsible for the proper and safe operation of road tunnels . This activity is a specialization of the road attendant , there is no separate training . The employers usually include road and motorway maintenance depots .

The main activities of this profession include the maintenance of the tunnel system, including the escape routes and safety equipment. Tunnel attendants also monitor the flow of traffic in the tunnel from a control room with the help of surveillance cameras. In the event of an accident, it controls the traffic using electronic displays ( variable message signs ) and thus ensures the safety of road users.
