The Turan lowlands are around 1.9 million km² in size in Central Asia .

Turan is an archaic landscape name from a Persian perspective, see Turan (region) . Turan is most likely to be equated with Turkestan .

geography

The Turan lowlands are located on the territory of the states of Turkmenistan , Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan . It lies between the Caspian Sea in the west and the Central Asian high mountains in the east; in the north it borders on the Urals and the Kazakh threshold .

It is on average approx. 300 m above sea level. There are a few smaller plateaus.

In the south there are oases and irrigated river valleys with agricultural cultivation areas for cotton and grain. 80% of the area of ​​the Turan lowlands are sand or salt deserts. There are only smaller herbal plants and shrubs, which are mainly used by herds of sheep and camels.

A number of rivers flow through the Turan lowlands. The most important are the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya , which in the Northern Aral Sea opens.
