As Turionen (Sing .: the Turio, Turion or Turione; latin turio, -onis - Stock rung), also known as winter buds or Hibernakeln is called the hibernation numerous vegetative organs formed aquatic plants . Before the start of winter or a pause in vegetation , these separate from the mother plant in the form of short shoots with leaves or leaf parts and sink to the bottom of the water. In deep water (mostly 4 ° C due to the thermal stratification ) the plant survives (“ hibernates ”) so the cold season and in spring it drives out again under more favorable conditions and reaches the water surface.
