Turkish Airlines Flight 278 was a scheduled domestic flight of the Turkish airline Turkish Airlines from Ankara to Van on which a Boeing 737-400 crashed near Van Airport on December 29, 1994 .

The aircraft was on a scheduled flight from Ankara to Van . After the first attempt to land in Van, the aircraft crashed into runway 03 on the second attempt to land due to poor visibility and a snowstorm against a mountain around 1,700 meters high. Five of the seven crew members and 52 of the 69 passengers were killed in the accident.

Approach procedure

The approach procedure for Ferit Melen Airport is only a VOR-DME approach procedure . It is not a precision approach procedure, which makes the landing approach in poor visibility z. B. very difficult for the pilots in fog.
