Tower stairs 16 (Mönchengladbach)
The big tower and the city wall Turmstiege 16 are in Mönchengladbach ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) in the Gladbach district .
The structures were built between the 14th and 17th centuries and entered into the monuments list of the city of Mönchengladbach on May 14, 1985 under No. T 011 .
location
The property is directly connected to the medieval old town. It is located on the north-western slope of the Abbey Mountain between the Altem Markt and the tower staircase, Waldhausener Strasse, Ludwigstrasse and Aachener Strasse.
architecture
The thick tower - also known as the Krapohl tower - with the adjoining city wall is a striking remnant of the late medieval city fortifications, which - preserved up to a height of seven meters before its renovation - was made of field fire bricks and - like most of the medieval and early modern ones Fortifications - on the field side probably had a trench in front as an additional obstacle to the approach.
The city fortification consists of a mighty round tower with an outer diameter of approx. 12.5 m, a wall approx. 30 m long and a small side tower on a semicircular floor plan with a diameter of approx. Five meters. Uncovered in 1974, rebuilt for reconstruction and surrounded by redesigned outdoor facilities, the so-called tower staircase leads to the old market as a pedestrian connection on the built-up city side, while a small green area was created on the former side of the ditch.
The property is worthy of protection as a monument for reasons of urban history, building history, architectural history and urban planning.
