Turritopsis nutricula is a Hydrozoen - Art from the genus Turritopsis in the family of oceanidae . Various species of the genus Turritopsis were previouslyassigned to Turritopsis nutricula , including the "immortal jellyfish", which is now considered a separate species, Turritopsis dohrnii .
features
Turritopsis nutricula forms upright, branched hydroid colonies . The polyp heads (hydrant) are spindle-shaped to club-shaped, their thread-like tentacles are irregularly distributed over the body of the hydrant. The cover (periderm) around the stem (hydrocaulus) is two-ply. The Medusa buds ( gonophores ) develop on the stems in a region enveloped with perisarc.
The medusa are up to 6 mm high with 40 to 100 tentacles whose tips can be thickened. The stomach stalk (manubrium) is dull yellow or orange, the ocelles (eyes) are dark brown or orange. The eggs are 0.116 millimeters in diameter.
distribution
Turritopsis nutricula occurs from the tropical to the temperate western Atlantic , the range extends from New England to Brazil . The species is probably not widespread on the coasts of Europe. All well-documented sightings off European coasts were Turritopsis polycirrha or Turritopsis dohrnii . Since many Turritopsis species were viewed as synonyms of Turritopsis nutricula , the species appeared to be around the world. In the meantime, populations previously regarded as intraspecific variations are classified as separate species and the range of Turritopsis nutricula is limited to the western Atlantic.
Way of life
Turritopsis nutricula is sexually separated , the females are oviparous .
