Tutanota is an open-source , end-to-end encrypting email software and a secure email service with a freemium business model. The software and service are developed and administered by the company Tutao GmbH , which is based in Hanover . The company's business model does not rely on advertising and is only based on donations and premium subscriptions.

The term tutanota is made up of the Latin words tuta for safe / protected and nota for letter.

As of March 2017, Tutanota had more than two million users.

The app for Android, which does not use Google services, can be obtained from F-Droid .

In addition to apps for Android and iOS, Tutanota has been offering its own desktop clients for Linux, Windows and Mac OS since December 2018.

An encrypted calendar was introduced in July 2019.
