Tux cattle

The Tuxer , also Tuxer Rind or Tux-Zillertaler Rind , is a domestic cattle breed that is particularly widespread in the Alpine region. It is one of the ancient breeds of domestic animals whose populations are endangered today.

Appearance features

The Tux cattle have a black or strong red-brown hair coat with white markings on the pelvic area and the base of the tail as well as on the lower abdomen and udder . The head is short and broad with strong horns. The trunk is compact, broad and well muscled. The legs are relatively short. The height at the withers in bulls is 140 centimeters; they weigh between 800 and 900 kilograms. Cows reach a height at the withers of 120 to 130 centimeters and weigh between 550 and 600 kilograms when fully grown. Tux cattle are a frugal breed that used to be kept on alpine pastures .

Similar to the Eringers , Tux cattle also have a high potential for aggression , which leads to long competitions among the cows. In earlier times, selection was occasionally based on the desire to fight, which led to a decrease in milk yield.

Breeding history

The breed of Tux cattle is said to be descended from the Eringer cattle. The breed was originally widespread in Tyrol and has also influenced the development of other Alpine breeds. Already in the 19th century it was pushed back in favor of other, more productive cattle breeds and mostly only kept in the Zillertal . Tux cattle are involved in the creation of a number of Russian breeds.

Today there are only between 110 and 300 animals. There has been an association in the Zillertal since the 1980s that is dedicated to the preservation of this old breed of domestic animal.
