Twelve Apostles (Burley Moor)

The Twelve Apostles

The Twelve Apostles (Eng. Twelve Apostles) in Burley Moor are a Bronze Age stone circle in the north of West Yorkshire in England , near the "Cow and Calf rocks", 380 m above sea level. NN lies. There is a stone circle of the same name ( Twelve Apostles ) between Hollywood and Newbridge in Dumfries and Galloway .

The circle still has eleven stones today. While St. Ross assumes that only one is missing, A. Raistrick assumes that there were originally about 20, which were set in the circle of about 16 m in diameter, within a stone wall. The circle is somewhat similar to the Embanked Stone Circle found in Derbyshire . None of the stones is particularly large, the largest is less than 1.5 m high.

There are theories that the stones were used to observe the movement of the moon, sun or other celestial bodies, but since the place has been changed in the past, there is no evidence to support this.

This district is often located in the Ilkley Moor. However, it is located in Burley Moor, which is part of the larger Rombald's Moor. Nearby are the rock carvings in the Ilkley Moor .
