The UBC Botanical Garden is a botanical garden on the grounds of the University of British Columbia in the University Endowment Lands , a community-free area just west of the Canadian city of Vancouver . It is the oldest university botanical garden in the country, is 44 hectares in size and has over 8,000 different plant species.

The facility is divided into several gardens; an alpine garden, an Asian garden, a fruit garden, a garden with native plants, a garden with medicinal plants and an arboretum .

The garden was founded in 1916 when the botanist John Davidson moved his plant collection, which had been in existence since 1912, to the university campus. The botanical garden has been at its current central location since 1968; previously, the plants grew in several places scattered across the campus. In 2002 the Center for Plant Research was opened .

The UBC Botanical Garden also manages the Nitobe Memorial Garden , which is also on the university campus but is spatially separated.
