The Vancouver Aquarium (officially Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Center , also known as Vanaqua ) is an aquarium in the Canadian city of Vancouver . It is located in Stanley Park and is one of the main tourist destinations. The aquarium is run by a non-profit organization that does not receive any government support. It is the largest aquarium and marine biology research center in Canada. The 9000 m² property is owned by the city and managed by the city park authorities.

You can see dolphins , sharks , white whales , Steller sea lions , seals and sea otters . A total of around 300 species of fish, thousands of invertebrates, 56 species of amphibians and 60 mammals and birds live here.

It opened on June 15, 1956, making Vanaqua the oldest public aquarium in Canada. It is now the largest in the country and among the five largest in North America.

In the summer of 2014 there was a public controversy over the keeping and rearing of whales and dolphins. After two members of the Vancouver park board criticized the attitude of cetacea (whales), Gregor Robertson , the mayor of Vancouver, spoke out against the practice. He received support from behavioral scientist Jane Goodall , who described the captivity of beluga whales and the Vancouver Aquarium's rearing program as "scientifically unsustainable".
