uDraw
The uDraw Game Tablet is from the US game publisher THQ developed drawing tablet for gaming consoles Wii , Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 . After initial success, the product turned out to be a financial failure for the manufacturer that eventually drove the company into bankruptcy.
description
With the help of a pressure-sensitive touch pen , entries can be made on the 15 x 10 cm drawing area. Depending on the loaded application, these are output as drawing commands or control pulses. With the uDraw GameTablet, games can also be controlled via inclination and motion sensors. These are integrated in the GameTablet or in the version for the Wii console in the Wii remote control, which is also required there to power the GameTablet.
The drawing software uDraw Studio, which has various tools, stamp libraries, image templates, painting surfaces and functions, was delivered together with the hardware. Images created can be exported via an SD memory card in order to transfer the drawings to a PC and, for example, forward them to friends or print them out.
Publication and sales
The uDraw GameTablet was presented to the public for the first time at Gamescom 2010. It was first published on November 15, 2010 in the USA and Canada. It has been on sale in Europe since March 4, 2011. By the end of THQ's 2011 financial year, ending in March 2011, 1.7 million copies had been sold for the Wii. THQ therefore announced a porting of uDraw to the competing consoles PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. However, with the final report for the 2012 financial year in March 2012, THQ had to confirm a significant drop in sales in the uDraw hardware and software segment, which led to a loss of income of around 100 million US dollars and an inventory surplus of 1.4 million units. Overall, the resulting operating loss for the company for fiscal 2012 amounted to 30 million US dollars, according to its own information. Due to the financial difficulties of the publisher, the software development for the device was stopped with immediate effect and the sale of the remaining units was announced through special offers.
