The Ultimate Fighting Championship Part II (later renamed UFC 2: No Way Out ) was a mixed martial arts event of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). It took place on March 11, 1994 at the Mammoth Gardens Arena in Denver , Colorado , United States and was broadcast on pay-per-view .
event
background
UFC 2 was the second event hosted by the UFC after UFC 1: The Beginning in November 1993. Again, a tournament format in the knockout system was used, but this time with 16, i.e. twice as many participants. In addition, the prize money for the winner of this tournament has been increased to 60,000 US dollars .
The same rules were applied as in UFC 1 . Thus there were still no weight classes , time restrictions, etc. A fight could still only be decided by knockout , surrender or technical knockout after throwing in a towel from the corner of a fighter. The only prohibited actions were looking and biting the opponent.
"Defending champion" was the winner of the UFC 1 tournament Royce Gracie .
Alberto Cerra Leon, David Levicki, Frank Hamaker, Fred Ettish, Johnny Rhodes, Minoki Ichihara, Orlando Wiet, Ray Wizard, Remco Pardoel, Robert Lucarelli, Scott Baker, Scott Morris, Sean Daugherty and Thaddeus Luster made their debuts in the UFC. So Gracie and Patrick Smith were the only participants who had already fought at UFC 1 . In addition, Jason DeLucia had fought in an alternative fight at UFC 1 , but not in the tournament itself.
On the official side, the well-known MMA referee John McCarthy made his UFC debut. Ben Perry sat at the commentator's desk for the first time.
course
A total of 15 fights took place in the course of the 16-man tournament. Frank Hamaker had to be replaced by reserve man Fred Ettish after his actually victorious fight in the first round against Thaddeus Luster, as he was no longer fit to fight due to an injury.
With Gracie and Smith, the only two fighters who had already participated in UFC 1 made it into the final . There Gracie was able to defeat his opponent after one minute and 17 seconds by giving up. Gracie won the first two UFC tournaments and is still the only one who could win four UFC fights in one evening.
