The Ultimate Fighting Championship III (later renamed UFC 3: The American Dream ) was a mixed martial arts event of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). It took place on September 9, 1994 at the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte , North Carolina , United States and was broadcast on pay-per-view .

UFC 3 was played in the format of an eight-man tournament , the winner of which received $ 60,000 . There were no weight classes or weight limits in the tournament. As with UFC 1: The Beginning and UFC 2: No Way Out, the individual fights had no time limits or rounds, so no judges were present. A fight could only be decided by giving up , knockout , technical knockout and for the first time by referee decision. Referee in every fight that night was John McCarthy .

Steve Jennum won the tournament by beating Harold Howard in the final . Jennum had only made it into the final as a replacement for Ken Shamrock , who could no longer compete due to an injury, making this his only fight of the evening. It was the first UFC tournament that was not won by Royce Gracie , as he was also eliminated due to injury before his semi-final against Howard.

After Jennum won the tournament as a substitute, the UFC initiated alternative qualification bouts at the following events, thus preventing the advantage of a possible substitute fighter of having previously completed one or two fewer bouts.
