The URTES network ( U HF R adio- Te lefonie- S ystem ) was a mobile radio system for telephony from the GDR . It was introduced in Mexico from 1981 .

Technical specifications

The network in the UHF range had a range of around 40 kilometers from the subscriber to the base station, with a maximum of 120 subscribers.

Emergence

It was developed, delivered and installed within 18 months by VEB Funkwerk Köpenick , an operation of the VEB Kombinat Nachrichtenelektronik under the direction of Gottfried Schuppang. The network had been put out to tender internationally and the combine won the contract.

use

It was opened on September 12, 1981 by then President of Mexico José López Portillo , when he telephoned the then governor of the state of Guerrero , Cervantes Delgado from Nopaltepec in the presence of Erich Honecker , who at the time was in a remote mountain village without any connection to the Telephone network. At that time, Honecker was on a state visit to Mexico.

The system was delivered to other Mexican states, Algeria and Mozambique . The GDR redeemed several million in foreign currency. When there was a shortage of telephone connections as a result of the fall of the Wall , the system was briefly activated again for public telephone traffic at the manufacturer's works.
