The US Navy took over the San Fernando Mission on October 21, 1947 and placed it under the Military Sea Transportation Service as USNS Mission San Fernando (T-AO-122) on October 1, 1949 , until it was decommissioned on May 24, 1955 has been. From June 21, 1956 to September 4, 1957 she was again in service.

On September 28, 1964, she was again taken over by the US Navy and converted into a telemetry ship by General Dynamics in Quincy . During the renovation, the ship was first named USNS Mussel Shoals (T-AGM-19) in 1964 , then on September 1, 1965 the name USNS Vanguard (T-AGM-19). It was put into service again on February 28, 1966.

Use as a telemetry ship

The ship was equipped with instruments used in the US Apollo and Skylab programs in the 1960s and 1970s. In order to be able to guarantee permanent contact with the spacecraft in orbit , these ships fulfilled the task of closing the communication gaps between the land stations. After use in the Apollo program, the technical systems for space communication were replaced by test equipment for submarine communication and location. On August 6, 1993 the ship was decommissioned.
