The USS Coronado (AGF-11) (previously LPD-11 ) was an amphibious transport dock in the service of the United States Navy . She was in the Austin class .

history

The ship was built by the Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company in Seattle and is named after the city of Coronado , California .

In 1970 the Coronado was incorporated into the US Atlantic fleet and spent some time in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. In 1980 she was modernized and used as the command ship of the US Middle East Fleet, which was stationed in the Persian Gulf.

In October 1985, the ship replaced the USS Puget Sound (AD-38) as the command ship of the 6th US Fleet . For the next ten months, the ship participated in an operation in the Gulf of Sidra, fighting Lebanese terrorists.

In July 1986, the Coronado was replaced as a command ship and stationed in Pearl Harbor , only to become the command ship of the 3rd Fleet a little later . Then the ship was relieved again, soon afterwards used again as a command ship. In 1988 the ship came back to Pearl Harbor.

During this time, the Coronado and the 3rd fleet were the center of innovations and improvements of all kinds. In 1998 the ship was extensively modernized. After the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19) , the command ship of the 7th Fleet, had to go into dry dock, the Coronado took over its duties.

In 2006 the ship was finally decommissioned and is now waiting to be demolished.
