The USS Grayling (SSN-646) was a nuclear submarine in the service of the United States Navy and belonged to the Sturgeon class .

history

construction

The Grayling was commissioned in 1962 and laid down in May 1964 in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard . After a construction period of over three years, the boat was launched. The commissioning took place in 1969.

collision

On March 20, 1993, the Grayling collided with a Russian submarine, the K-407 of the Delta IV class . Both submarines were badly damaged, but were able to return to their respective home ports under their own power.

The Grayling was repaired and in July 1996 took part in a NATO exercise in the eastern Atlantic and western Mediterranean. On March 1, 1997, the ship was assigned to the reserve fleet , on July 18, it was finally decommissioned . By 1998 the Grayling was abandoned in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard .
