history

The parche was commissioned in 1968 and laid down at Ingalls Shipbuilding in late 1970 . Launched in 1973, commissioned in 1974. The boat served in the Atlantic fleet until 1976, then in the Pacific fleet.

In 1978 the parche was rebuilt for special operations. 1987-1991 she was again significantly modified in the Mare Island Naval Shipyard . A 100 foot (30 meter) long section was added directly in front of the tower . This section of the hull, called the bat cave, contained, among other things, a hatch through the bottom of the submarine through which probes could be deployed. The Parche was the third submarine converted in this way for “special tasks”. The first two were the USS Halibut (SSGN-587) and the USS Seawolf (SSN-575) . In the 80s and 90s, the USS Richard B. Russell (SSN-687) also carried out "special tasks".

Remodeled was the Parche on the advice of the US Navy Intelligence to as part of the Cold War, an undersea cable in the Barents Sea to tap into and bring the information to the United States.

In 2004, the parche was decommissioned and demolished in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard . Since then, the USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23) of the Seawolf class has been used for special operations .
