from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Kearny in Reykjavík harbor two days after being torpedoed by U-568. The hole on the starboard side amidships is clearly visible. Behind it lies alongside the US destroyer USS Monssen .

The USS Kearny was an American Gleaves-class destroyer .

The destroyer accompanied the Allied convoy SC-48 in the North Atlantic . The convoy was attacked on October 17, 1941 by the German submarine "Wolfsrudel shredder" . Despite the official neutrality of the United States, several US destroyers accompanied the convoy and attacked German submarines. During the battle, a torpedo from the German submarine U 568 hit the destroyer amidships on the starboard side . Eleven sailors died and 22 were injured. The ship could still reach Iceland with reduced power .

Convoy battle

At that time there was no state of war between the German Reich and the USA. In the middle of the convoy battle, British and American warships fought the five German submarines with depth charges, which sank a total of eight freighters (42,000 GRT), three tankers (25,000 GRT) and two destroyers.

It was not until December 11, 1941, four days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor , that Germany and Italy officially declared war on the United States .

Whereabouts

The USS Kearny was later repaired in Boston . The ship was scrapped in 1972.
