The USS Peterson (DD-969) , named after Lieutenant Commander Carl Jerrold Peterson (1936–1968), was the seventh Spruance-class destroyer in the United States Navy .
history
Built by Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi , she was commissioned on July 9, 1977. It was taken out of service on October 4, 2002.
In 2004 the Navy used this ship as a target as part of a weapons test maneuver ("DD 21 Program Weapons Effects Test") and sank it.
