The USS Thorn (DD-988) was a the Spruance-class destroyer belonging destroyer of the US Navy , which was made in February 1980 in service. The ship remained in active service until August 2004, making it one of the last in service in its class. On July 22, 2006, the Thorn was sunk as a target ship.

history

The Thorn was commissioned on January 15, 1975 as one of 31 units of the Spruance class and laid down on August 29, 1977 in the shipyard of Ingalls Shipbuilding . On February 3, 1977 the ship was launched, the commissioning took place on February 15, 1980. The destroyer was named after the officer Jonathan Thorn (1779-1811).

The Thorn spent a large part of their service time with training missions, which often took them to Europe. In 1996 she was also a guest in the port of Hamburg . In 2002 the ship took part in the SINKEX training mission , in which decommissioned ships of the United States Navy are sunk as targets.

The Thorn remained in active service until August 25, 2004 and was then retired after 24 years of service. It was one of the last active units in its class. After almost two years in the reserve fleet , the ship itself was sunk on July 22nd, 2006 as a floating target on the east coast of the USA during a SINKEX mission.
