USS Ranger

In the history of the United States Navy , seven ships were named USS Ranger :

  • The first USS Ranger was an 18-gun sloop . The ship, commanded by John Paul Jones , was captured by the Royal Navy in 1780 and put into service as HMS Halifax .
  • The second USS Ranger was bought by the Navy in 1814. The schooner was armed with a single 18 pounder and was sold in 1816.
  • The third USS Ranger was a 14-gun brig . It was also purchased in 1814 and remained in service until 1821.
  • The fourth USS Ranger was a gunboat of the Alert class . It was launched in 1876 and converted into a training ship in 1908 . The ship, renamed several times, was scrapped in 1958.
  • The fifth USS Ranger was a motor yacht built in 1910 that was in service with the US Navy as a patrol boat between 1917 and 1919 and 1930/31 and was then sold.
  • The sixth USS Ranger was a motorboat launched in 1882. In 1918 and 1919 it was used as a mine defense vehicle in coastal defense.
  • The seventh USS Ranger was a battle cruisers of the Lexington class . The ship was piled up in 1921, but after the construction freeze in 1923 it was demolished again unfinished.
  • The eighth USS Ranger was an aircraft carrier . The ship, launched in 1933, was the first of the US Navy to be planned as a carrier. It remained in service until 1946 and was sold for demolition a year later.
  • The ninth USS Ranger is a Forrestal- class aircraft carrier launched in 1956. The ship remained in service until 1993 and has been in Bremerton ever since .
