The University Hospital Brussels ( UZ Brussel , formerly AZ-VUB ) is a Flemish hospital in the municipality of Jette in the Brussels-Capital Region .

The hospital mainly works with the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel . The university's medical campus is also located in Jette, near the hospital. It is also a teaching hospital for the nursing students of the Erasmushogeschool Brussel , which is also located in Jette.

It has around 700 beds. More than 25,000 inpatients and 400,000 outpatients are treated annually.

history

After the Free University of Brussels was split into a French-speaking and a Flemish university in 1968/69, the Flemish Vrije Universiteit Brussel considered building a medical faculty with an attached hospital.

The foundation stone was laid on April 18, 1977, the first patient was admitted on June 6, 1977, and the official opening of the hospital was on October 13, 1977. At that time there were 124 beds. The number of beds grew to 439 by 1980 and was 679 in 1987. In 2006, 30 beds were taken over from the Dodoen Hospital. In 2009, 20 beds were added in the area of ​​child and adolescent psychiatry.

The hospital's emergency center helped provide first aid after the 1985 Heysel disaster and after the Herald of Free Enterprise sank in 1987, and was part of the disaster planning for the 2000 European Football Championship .
