Jean-Pierre Van Rossem (born May 29, 1945 in Bruges - † December 14, 2018 ) was a Belgian scientist, politician, sponsor and writer.

Life

Van Rossem studied economics at Ghent University from 1963 to 1967 . With his thesis he won the International Scholarship Prize of Flanders and was able to study econometrics with Lawrence Klein in the USA for two years .

Moneytron / Formula 1 sponsor

He became famous with Moneytron , a stock market investment company that could offer seemingly endless returns. It turned out to be a scam.

Van Rossem had developed a model to predict the stock market and beat the capitalist system. His sympathies for the theories of Karl Marx did not stop him from making investments for the very wealthy in the world and amassing $ 800 million for himself. He declared himself an " anarchist ".

Because of his belief in the Moneytron system and also his sense of show and advertising, he found many investors and made big profits. In 1989 he was the main sponsor and later co-owner of the Formula 1 team Onyx Grand Prix , which was 10th out of 21 teams in the 1989 season .

The tax authorities and the courts were not blind to his methods. He founded the political party ROSSEM to avoid lawsuits (elected politicians are not liable to court in Belgium). This got three seats in the Belgian lower house in the 1991 elections. Van Rossem himself was a member of the Belgian Chamber of Deputies from November 1991 to May 1995 and of the Flemish Parliament from January 1992 to May 1995 .

At the coronation ceremony of King Albert II of Belgium, he shouted “Vive la République” (“Long live the Republic”).

Conviction for fraud

In 1991 he was sentenced to five years in prison for fraud.

Then he started writing his autobiography , which became a bestseller . His first wife, Nicole Annys, died in 1989. He then married Rachida Bettar, with whom he has a son.

According to a Belgian media report in spring 2009, Van Rossem was planning a political comeback for 2011.
