Ubangi-Shari ( Eindeutschung the French original name Oubangui-Chari ) was since 1894 the name of a region in Central Africa , the 1910 part of the colony French Equatorial Africa was. After the incorporation of a north-eastern part of the former German colony of Cameroon in 1916 during the First World War , the Ubangi-Shari area largely coincided with the territory of the Central African Republic, which has been independent since 1960 .

History of Ubangi Shari

The name Ubangi-Shari was formed from the two major rivers in the area: the Ubangi and the Shari . Around 1903 the French set up a colonial administration in the area of ​​little economic interest to them in order to forestall claims by other powers. In 1906 they united the area with their colony of Chad until it became part of greater French Equatorial Africa in 1910. With the establishment of the Central African Republic, the name Ubangi-Shari disappeared from the maps.
