Former territory of the Uchucklesaht and the two current reservations

The Uchucklesaht (formerly Howchukleset) are North American Indians and live on Vancouver Island , off the west coast of Canada . They speak Wakash and belong to the Nuu-chah-nulth . They are primarily represented vis-à-vis the government by the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council . In April 2010, 196 people were recognized as members of the tribe.

Uchucklesaht means something like "people there on the inner bay".

Reservations

The Uchucklesaht live in two reserves with a total of 232.7 hectares. Cowishil (70.8 ha) is located at Burrough Point, at the west entrance of Uchucklesit Harbor, Elhlateese (161.9 ha) is at the beginning of the harbor. The main residential area is Elhlatesee and is located at the northern end of the Uchucklesit Inlet. A total of 23 Uchucklesaht still live in the reservation, two women and one man live in other reservations, the remaining 170 tribesmen can be found outside the reservations. The total number of Uchucklesaht was 196 (April 2010).

history

In 1881 only 56 people were considered to be Uchucklesaht. They were assigned their current reserve in the 1880s. In 1881 the residents were divided into eight families with between 3 and 10 members. The oldest member of the tribe was the fisherman Hahklin at the age of 70. The chief was Kut luk sulh (40), who headed a ten-member family. Only a few names of recognizable European origin are found among adults, but these appear more frequently among children. In 1891 only 41 Uchucklesaht lived on the reservation, divided into five families. The chief was now the 52-year-old Cap Charlie.

Todays situation

Charlie Cootes has been the elected chief of the Uchucklesaht since 1983. He has four counselors (Councilors) at his side.

On June 16, 2007, the Uchucklesaht voted to accept the treaty with the governments of British Columbia and Canada. This increases their total area by 2834 ha. Together with the Toquaht , the Ka: 'yu:' k't'h '/ Che: k: tles7et'h' , the Ucluelet and the Huu-ay-aht , they form the Maa nulth group, which negotiated a separate contract. They are all given considerably more extensive areas (around 23,000 hectares) than the previous reserves, but at the same time they do without the original, much larger tribal areas. At the same time, the land is being privatized, so it is neither protected against sale nor expropriation. Therefore, the goal of the BC Treaty Process is increasingly controversial, as it could lead in the long term and with the current impoverishment of the Nuuk-chah-nulth to the extensive loss of tribal areas. Despite these reservations, 116 out of 120 (137 were entitled to vote) Uchucklesaht approved the contract. In June 2009 the federal government ratified the treaty.

The recovery of natural and cultural resources is different for each Nuu-chah-nulth tribe. In 2001, for example, the chief family Frank from the Uchucklesaht tribe learned that a curtain that had been missing since 1963 had appeared in the Andy Warhol collection or at an exhibition in New York. The Nuu-chah-nulth Congregation decided that each tribe should contribute to the $ 17,000 repurchase amount.
