Uddhav Thackeray

Uddhav Bal Thackeray ( Marathi उद्धव ठाकरे ; born July 27, 1960 in Mumbai ) is an Indian politician who has served as the 19th Chief Minister of Maharashtra since November 28, 2019 . He is the party leader of the Shiv Sena party .

career

Uddhav Thackeray was born on July 27, 1960 as the youngest of the three sons of the politician Bal Thackeray and his wife Meena Thackeray. His father was the founder of the right-wing populist and Hindunationalist Shiv Sena party. In 2002, Thackeray began his political career as the campaign manager of Shiv Sena in the elections for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (the administrative authority of the Mumbai agglomeration), in which the party achieved a good result. In 2003, he was appointed Labor President of Shiv Sena. Uddhav was editor-in-chief of Saamana (a daily newspaper in Marathi , published by Shiv Sena) from 2006 to 2019 . In 2006, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena party split from Shiv Sena under Uddhav's cousin Raj Thackeray . After his father's death in 2012, Uddhav Thackeray took over the chairmanship of Shiv Sena in 2013. As of 2014, Shiv Sena was part of a ruling coalition with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in his home state of Maharashtra.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra

After the parliamentary elections in Maharashtra in 2019, the coalition between the BJP and Shiv Sena broke up in early November 2019 due to disputes. Shiv Sena then negotiated the formation of a coalition government with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress Party (INC), two parties which ideologically have very little in common with Shiv Sena. In this coalition government, Thackeray was to become the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra. After an important NCP party member defected to the BJP and announced further convertions by NCP party members, Prime Minister Narendra Modi (BJP) had President's rule imposed in Maharashtra on November 12, 2019 . The previous Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis (BJP) was reinstated on November 23, 2019. The three coalition parties then had the possible defectors detained in a hotel, after which they revoked their announcement of defection to the BJP. Devendra Fadnavis then resigned on November 26, 2019 because he was unable to bring together a parliamentary majority. On November 28, 2019, Uddhav Thackeray was sworn in as the new Chief Minister.

Private

Thackeray is married to Rashmi Thackeray and has two sons, Aditya and Tejas. While the older son Aditya is MP for Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, the younger son Tejas lives in the United States .
