Bal Keshav Thackeray ( Marathi बाळ केशव ठाकरे Bal Keśav Thakare [ baːɭ ʈʰakəre ] * 23. January 1926 in Pune , † 17th November 2012 in Mumbai ) was an Indian politician . In 1966 he founded the Shiv Sena , a radical Hindu nationalist party, which is mainly active in the state of Maharashtra , and led it until his death.

Life

At a young age Thackeray worked as a cartoonist for the English-language daily newspaper Free Press Journal . In 1960 he founded the journal Marmik together with his brother . Thackeray was chairman of the Indian Shiv Sena party , which he founded on June 19, 1966. As a Hindu nationalist, he turned against any form of Islamic influence in the state of Maharashtra and in particular in Mumbai . Thackeray was married to Mina Thackeray and had three children. He lived in Mumbai with his family. Thackeray was an avowed admirer of Adolf Hitler .
