Uganda National Teachers 'Union (abbreviation: UNATU) is a Ugandan teachers' union .

history

Originally active as the Uganda Teachers Association (UTA), the teachers 'association changed its name to the Uganda National Teachers' Union in March 2003, thereby submitting to the trade union laws of 1971 (Trade Union Act). In 2006, these laws were updated with the Labor Unions Act. UNATU has been recognized as a non-profit organization since 2006 . With 140,000 members it is the largest and oldest teachers' union in the country.

The major tasks include, on the one hand, collective bargaining and, on the other hand, making the teaching profession more attractive. Uganda, once a pioneer in education policy within Africa, is now a developing country in the field of education. Low salary and a class size of 120 students make the teaching profession unattractive. Since its inception, the union has therefore called for a 100% pay increase as well as benefits such as travel allowance, free health insurance and pension increases. In 2011 the union called a strike and was able to ask Yoweri Museveni to make concessions before the upcoming elections , which were subsequently watered down again. At the same time, however, the union itself was in the kitic because, according to the split-off Uganda Liberal Teachers Union (ULTU), it selects members selectively and its structures are not transparent.

UNATU has been negotiating with Janet Museveni , the incumbent Minister of Education and First Lady of Uganda, since 2016 . In the negotiations she was able to get at least a 50% wage increase and educational spending under Museveni rose significantly.
