Janet Kataaha Museveni (birth name: Janet Kataaha Kainembabazi ; born June 24, 1948 ) is a Ugandan politician of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), who has been the First Lady of Uganda since 1986 as the wife of President Yoweri Museveni and has been Minister of Education and Sports since 2016 .

Life

Janet Museveni worked as a social worker and, as the wife of President Yoweri Museveni, has been Uganda's First Lady since January 26, 1986 . In addition, she has been the founder and patron of UWESO, a national organization for the support of orphans, since 1986, and since 1992 as the founder and patron of the Ugandan Youth Forum. In 1993 she graduated from the Montessori Education Center in Dublin with a diploma in Cognitive and Physiological Development in Children and has been the founder and patron of the National Strategy for the Advancement of Rural Women in Uganda since 1996. In 1997 she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education (BA Education) from Makerere University .

In 2006, Janet Museveni became a Member of the Parliament of Uganda , of which she was a member until 2016. In 2007 she was Chair of the African First Ladies' Forum for Cervical and Breast Cancer Prevention. In the cabinets of Prime Ministers Apolo Nsibambi , Amama Mbabazi and Ruhakana Rugunda , she served as Minister for Affairs for the Karamoja sub-region in the arid northeast of Uganda (Minister for Karamoja Affairs) , where the semi-nomadic pastoral people of the Karamojong live. In 2015, she obtained a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Leadership and Management (MA Organizational Leadership and Management) from Uganda Christian University in Mukono . In the course of a cabinet reshuffle, she took over the post of Minister of Education and Sports in the Rugunda cabinet on June 6, 2016 .

Her marriage to Yoweri Moseveni had four children, including the eldest son Muhoozi Kainerugaba , who, as major general, is the commander of the Special Operations Command of the Ugandan armed forces UPDF (Uganda People's Defense Force) .
