Ugly Ducklings or Four Eggs Explain the World is a musical by Peter Lund (text) and Thomas Zaufke (music) . It was conceived for four actors and eight puppets and is described in the subtitle as a "musical aid for city dwellers and other sexual marginalized groups" .
action
Fredo is gay and thinks it's absolutely okay. His parents have no problem with their gay son either, and neither does his buddy Erik, because this way he cannot dispute the girls. Fredo's best friend Jeanette is also very tolerant and a little in love with Fredo. But she would never admit that. But then Fredo meets Mehmed in a cinema, who doesn't like gays and whom he meets again a few hours later in the city park, where he takes his buttocks. Mehmed doesn't like that at all, and a fight ensues in which Fredo doesn't shy away either.
Mehmed is sentenced to fifty hours of community service by the youth welfare office. But that's not enough for Fredo: He wants to prove to the heterosexual Mehmed that he too is a real guy - a difficult undertaking that Fredo has set out to do, and not only Mehmed is not very enthusiastic about Fredo's missionary zeal, but also Erik and Jeanette . However, Fredo continues his crusade, even if it will soon be no longer weird for him to be gay ...
reception
The play looks at Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale of the ugly duckling from a “joyful new perspective” , and with “the educational methods of Sesame Street” , the play deals with being different and growing up. Four very different people and eight dolls think about why you feel different and how you learn to stand by yourself: In the play, Fredo explains how being gay works in the first place, Mehmed has a couple of pithy things at Unheilig Copied machinations, and Jeanette confesses her love to Fredo in Carpenter thirds.
The song “The Gay Man and the Muselmann” addresses all the prejudices one can have about gays and Turks, and Fredo's “Night in the Park” that gay men have anonymous sex .
premiere
Ugly Ducklings was premiered on May 25, 2007 in Ballhof Zwei (youth stage of the State Theater in Hanover) and could be seen until October 11, 2007.
