Ugnė Karvelis

Ugnė Karvelis (born June 13, 1935 in Noreikiškės , Lithuania ; † March 4, 2002 in Paris , France ) was a Lithuanian translator, critic, writer and ambassador, member of the UNESCO board from 1997 to 2002.

Ugnė Karvelis was the daughter of the Lithuanian politician Petras Karvelis ( Lithuanian Foreign Minister from 1925 to 1929) and the cultural activist Veronika Bakštytė . During the Soviet occupation (1940) the Karvelis family emigrated to Germany. From 1967 to 1979 Karvelis was the second wife of the Argentine writer Julio Cortázar .
