The Ukrainian People's Party ( Ukrajinska Narodna Partija , UNP for short) is a smaller conservative party in Ukraine that was part of the Our Ukraine Alliance . It is not to be confused with the centrist people 's party .

history

The UNP was founded in 1999 as the Ukrainian National Movement and renamed itself in 2002 to avoid confusion with the Ukrainian People's Movement , from which it originally split off. After having been represented in parliament for years, she ran unsuccessfully in the 2006 Ukrainian parliamentary elections . It failed because of the Ukrainian three percent hurdle. As a result, she was threatened with slipping into insignificance. She therefore joined the Our Ukraine Alliance for the 2007 follow-up elections under the leadership of President Viktor Yushchenko . Since then she has been represented in parliament again through this. From his own party she initially rejected an invitation to found a large joint center-right party in Ukraine. However, she was considered a reliable member of the alliance, since if she leaves, her re-entry into the Ukrainian parliament is massively endangered. In the parliamentary elections in Ukraine in 2014 , the party did not win a single seat.

Political orientation

The party has a democratic-conservative basic orientation. It supports the efforts to join Ukraine in the EU and NATO and generally stands for a stronger western orientation of the country.
