People's Party (Ukraine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The People's Party (German for Narodna partija , short: NP) is a rural-oriented political party in Ukraine . She was represented in the Ukrainian parliament through her membership in the Lytwyn block . It should not be confused with the former Ukrainian People's Party , which belonged to the rival alliance Our Ukraine .

history

The NP was founded in 1996 under the name of the Peasant Party. The party experienced its rise especially in 2004, when the chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn became president of the Ukrainian parliament . The following year it was renamed the People's Party in order to make its claim to representation for the entire population clearer.

In the 2006 parliamentary elections, she ran in alliance with three other parties (Narodnyj Blok Lytwyna), but still failed because of the three percent hurdle for re-entry into parliament (result: 2.44%). When another parliamentary election was scheduled for 2007, the People's Party changed its ally and merged with the Social Democrat-oriented Labor Party of Ukraine to form a new Lytvyn bloc. This managed the joint re-entry into the national parliament (3.96%). The chairman of the NP Lytwyn ran in the 2010 presidential election , but only received 2.35% of the vote. In the parliamentary elections in 2012 the party won two direct seats and entered the Verkhovna Rada.

Political orientation and importance

In its early days, the People's Party saw itself as representing the interests of the rural population. This focus was softened after the millennium. However, the party continues to have its strongholds in the countryside and is committed to improving rural infrastructure. She continues to represent centrist positions.
