history

The former village of Ulkebøl stretched from the church in a north-west direction towards Lake Ulkebøldam. The area east of the church is called Spang (German: Steg ). The name of the area probably refers to the passage from Vadbæk. In earlier times this ran through a marshland towards the Spanger Noors , which is part of the Augustenborg Fjord . Old maps of Ulkebøl also show dikes that were built to protect the area.

Spang train station

The railway company Amtsbanerne på Als (ABA), which was founded in 1898, set up a stop in the Spang area. In 1914, this stop developed into a train station , when a shop with a waiting hall and ticket sales opened there, as was already common at the stops of the German small railways .

The station was called Spang-Ulkebüll in German, but was renamed Spang in the course of the referendum in 1920 . When the narrow-gauge railways were shut down in 1933 and replaced by standard-gauge state railways between Sønderborg and Mommark, Spang station was retained, but with a new and smaller station building. Both buildings of the old and the new train station have been preserved and are now on Spang Street.

The Mommark railway line was shut down in 1962. Its route was preserved as a cycle and hiking trail , which leads south-west through the Sundsmark district of Sønderborg to Grundtvigs Allée and eastwards through the Spang Vade street to the Vollerup district.
