Ulrich Popplow

Ulrich Popplow (* 1926 ) is a former German athlete and author .

Career

From his youth, Popplow trained in the running competitions in the short distances. As early as the 1940s he was a squad athlete for the German Athletics Association and was supervised and trained by Rudolf Harbig . After graduating from the Felix-Klein-Gymnasium in Göttingen , he studied German language and literature, history and physical exercise at the University of Göttingen from the late 1940s to the early 1950s . At the same time he was successful as an active athlete at the university. In 1948 and 1949 he was German university champion in the short distance.

He achieved his most important sporting success in 1950. That year he won the gold medal at the German University Championships in the 4 x 400 meter relay in the line-up of Wolfgang Wünsche , Heinz Krebs , Jan Berghaus and Ulrich Popplow. For this victory he and other members of the squadron were on 29./30. July 1050 awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by Federal President Theodor Heuss .

After completing his studies, he became a teacher in the public school service after refusing an assistant position at the university for financial reasons. But he remained part-time science through numerous sports science and sports political publications.
