Ulrich Rüther (born March 18, 1968 in Ibbenbüren ) is a German insurance manager.

Life and education

Rüther was born on March 18, 1968 in Ibbenbüren / Westphalia . After high school and banking apprenticeship, Rüther studied business administration with a focus on banking and insurance management at the Catholic University of Eichstätt (Bavaria) and at the University of Cologne . In 1995 he graduated with a degree in business administration.

Professional background

Rüther began his professional development in 1995 at the Gerling Group in Cologne (now Talanx ) as a trainee in property insurance. In 1996 he moved to Victoria Insurance in Düsseldorf (today Ergo Group ) and became assistant to the CEO. In 2000 he took over responsibility for controlling the foreign subsidiaries of the ERGO insurance group. From 2002 Rüther was responsible for sales through banks and at the same time was appointed a member of the board of the group's life insurance plan with the departments of sales, personnel and capital investments. In 2003, Rüther took over board memberships in Victoria insurance companies (property insurance, life insurance, health insurance) for the sales / banking department, and from 2005 also for the sales / broker department.

Rüther switched to Provinzial Nordwest Versicherungsunternehmen ( Münster / Kiel ) in 2006 and initially took over as chairman of the board of Provinzial Nordwest Lebensversicherung AG and Provinzial Nord Brandkasse AG in Kiel, whose sales department he also headed. In addition, he was deputy. Chairman of the board of the group parent company Provinzial Nordwest Holding AG in Münster. In 2009 Rüther also took over the chairmanship of the Westfälische Provinzial Versicherung AG (Münster) and the Provinzial Nordwest Holding AG.

During Rüther's term of office, the successful restructuring of the formerly high-loss Provinzial Nord Brandkasse in Kiel and the merger of the regional insurers in Westphalia, Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which were merged in 2005, are part of the Provinzial Nordwest concern. Also of great media interest at the turn of the year 2012/2013 was the ultimately failed attempt by Allianz SE to take over the second largest public insurer Provinzial Nordwest. At the end of 2014, Rüther resigned from the Provincial Board. Rüther is co-owner of the underwriting agent for special risks Hansekuranz Kontor GmbH, which is now majority owned by Munich Reinsurance Company.

Investigation into fake attack

In December 2012, reports of an alleged attack with a stab wound on Rüther attracted attention. After, according to the public prosecutor's office, a forensic doctor had described a dynamic offense as unlikely, Rüther admitted to the investigative authorities that he had done this to himself and had invented the attack on himself. The subsequent proceedings for pretending to be a criminal offense were discontinued in exchange for an undisclosed amount of money. The events caused irritation in the professional world and the insurance industry. Rüther was confirmed in office by the supervisory board as chairman of the provincial board. The Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin), which is responsible for assessing the professional suitability and personal reliability of bank and insurance directors, did not raise any objections after the examination. In this respect, the specialist media reported on an enigmatic event that Rüther never commented on publicly.

Volunteering

Rüther is increasingly active on a voluntary basis. The deputy must be named in extracts. Chairman of the board of the employers' association of insurance companies in Germany (Munich) and the activity as deputy. President of the IHK North Westphalia in Münster. Since 2015 he has been jointly responsible for the rating judgments of insurance companies on the rating committee of the Assekurata Assekuranz Rating-Agentur (Cologne). He also supports, for example, Aktion Deutschland Hilft, the alliance of renowned German aid organizations based in Bonn, on business issues.
