Ulrich Schäfer (football official)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ulrich Schäfer (born December 15, 1940 ) is a former German football functional . From 1976 to 1990 he was managing director of VfB Stuttgart under the honorary club president Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, who was primarily responsible for the club's sports management and then until 2000 managing director.

Before working as a football manager, Ulrich Schäfer was mayor of the community of Heiningen / Waldrems. On January 1, 1976, Schäfer took over the office of managing director at VfB Stuttgart and thus also the function of sports manager. Right at the beginning of his activity he was involved in the rebuilding of the soccer team after relegation from the Bundesliga and was also involved in signing the promotion coach Jürgen Sundermann . Ulrich Schäfer was the most important decision-maker at VfB Stuttgart after Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder and when the club president was absent he acted de facto as his deputy. After Dieter Hoeneß , who had taken on the position of sports manager at VfB in 1990, was dismissed in 1995, Ulrich Schäfer took over his successor's duties on an interim basis. Before Karlheinz Förster took over the sporting management of the club in 1998, Ulrich Schäfer promoted the later national coach Joachim Löw from assistant coach to head coach of VfB Stuttgart in 1996 . With the end of the term of office of President Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, Ulrich Schäfer left the board of directors of Stuttgart in 2000. Other VfB officials blamed Schäfer and Mayer-Vorfelder's transfer policy for the club's financial distress at the time.
