Ulrich Schmied
Ulrich Schmied (* in Sulmingen ; † before 1541) also called "Schmid von Sulmingen" , was a blacksmith and leader of the Baltringer Haufen during the Peasants' War .
Life
Little is known about his life. In 1525 he was the leader of the Baltringer Haufen against the troops of the Swabian League . He took part in the negotiations with the Swabian Federation . In 1496 or 1497 he took over a forge in Sulmingen from his father . At that time Sulmingen was part of the territory of the Cistercian convent of Heggbach . The extent to which he influenced the drafting of the text of the Twelve Articles cannot be understood. He did not belong to the militant camp of the peasants and wanted to end the conflict with the monasteries, bailiffs and emperors peacefully.
After the defeat of the farmers near Leipheim on April 12, 1525, he fled to the Confederation with his wife and children . He never returned to the Heggbach monastery. Nothing is known about his stay or place of death in the Confederation.
