Count Ulrich fell in the battle of Döffingen in 1388, which is considered the largest and bloodiest battle of the 14th century in all of southern Germany. He led the vanguard of the sovereign's army, which went into battle against the Free Imperial Cities .

The entire vanguard was wiped out. But his father, Eberhard the Greiner , who came with the main army, managed to win the battle.

The Battle of Döffingen is considered to be the decisive battle through which the power of the Swabian League of Cities was broken, and which thus made the Duchy and later the Kingdom of Württemberg possible.
