Ulrike Krewer

Ulrike Krewer (* 1976 ) is a German chemical engineer and university lecturer at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) . It deals with fuel cells and batteries.

Ulrike Krewer grew up near Trier. From 1995 she studied chemical engineering at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg with a diploma in 2001. Before graduating, she was at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology in Hyderabad, where she developed a computer program for the environmentally friendly use of solvents in chemical engineering. She then worked at the Max Planck Institute for the Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg under Kai Sundmacher and received her doctorate in 2005 from the University of Magdeburg. The dissertation on direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) received the university dissertation award. She attributed the overshooting of the voltage of the DMFCs with a sudden increase in consumption (current jump) to the different reaction speeds of the three oxidation reactions of the methanol at the anode. As a post-doctoral student , she was an engineer at Samsung's Energy Research Center in Suwong in South Korea in 2006/07 and head of the Otto Hahn Research Group Portable Energy Systems at the MPI for the Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg from 2008 to 2011 , where she was junior professor in Magdeburg from 2009. From 2012 to 2020 she was a professor at the TU Braunschweig and head of the Institute for Energy and System Process Engineering, succeeding Reinhard Leithner . She also ran the Battery Lab Factory at the TU Braunschweig and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt with Arno Kwade and colleagues. Since April 2020 she has been head of the sub- institute for electrical engineering materials at the Institute for Applied Materials at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

In 2017 she was a visiting researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Richard Braatz .

In 2007 she received the Otto Hahn Prize from the Max Planck Society. In 2010 she received the Research Prize for Basic Research from Saxony-Anhalt and the Prize Interactive Science from the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft.

In 2019 she will give a plenary lecture at the GDCh Science Forum Chemistry ( understanding kinetics as a catalyst for a future electrochemical energy supply ).
