Ulrike Westkamp (born September 10, 1959 in Haldern ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and currently mayor of the city of Wesel .

Life and politics

From 1966 Westkamp first attended the Catholic elementary school and later the Catholic elementary school. She then attended the municipal secondary school and the municipal high school in Wesel-Mitte ( Andreas-Vesalius-Gymnasium Wesel ). She left school in 1978 with a high school diploma. From 1978 to 1987 she studied political science , sociology and education at RWTH Aachen University with a Magister Artium degree, followed by administrative sciences at the University of Administrative Sciences Speyer with a Magistra rerum publicarum.

From 1987 to 1991 she was a pedagogical assistant for youth and adult education at the Klausenhof Academy in Hamminkeln-Dingden. Between 1992 and 2004 she held various managerial positions at the Federal Employment Agency in Düsseldorf, Wesel, Coesfeld and Essen. In the meantime she was a lecturer at the University of Trier from 1993 to 1998.

She has been the mayor of the city of Wesel since October 2004 ; Moreover, she has directed the Department of Urban Development . She is the first woman to head the city. In the local elections in 2009 and 2014 she was re-elected by the citizens of Wesel with 52%. With her re-election, Westkamp has the longest, continuous term of office as mayor of the city of Wesel. In 2018, she announced that she would run for a fourth term in the 2020 local elections. On June 3rd, the SPD Wesel elected her unanimously as candidate for mayor.

Westkamp has been married since 1998. The couple is childless.
