The Omar Al-Mukhtar University ( in Arabic جامعة عمر المختار, DMG Ǧāmiʿat ʿUmar al-Muḫtār ; English Omar al-Mukhtar University ), formerly known as Mohammed-bin-Ali-as-Sanusi University, is a public university in the city of al-Baida , the third largest city in Libya . It is the second largest university in Libya and the first Islamic university in the country.

It is named after Umar al-Muchtar (1862–1931), the Koran teacher and freedom fighter against Italian colonial rule.

Its origins go back to 1961 when it was founded under the name Mohammed-bin-Ali-as-Sanusi-University after the founder of the Sanusiya order, Muhammad as-Sanussi (1787-1859).

After gaining independence in the 1980s, it changed its name to its current one.

Several of its faculties are located in the cities of al-Quba , Derna and Tobruk .
